Hello everyone, I'm Jemma. I am a married mum to 5 boys. Our family is a mixture of neurodivergence and neurotypical. My eldest is diagnosed with Autism and PICA. My two middle children hold no diagnosis'. And my two youngest children are Autistic with Global Developmental Delay and learning disabilities. One is non verbal and our youngest is
pre-verbal, echolalic and a gestalt language processor.
I wrote the poem above when we started our journey into the SEND world with our 4th child. Although our journey first began in 2008 with our eldest; it was initially a journey of denial and self doubt, as certainly from an educational standpoint, he went under the radar of professionals because he was 'fine in school'. Our journey with our younger two was very different. Their support needs are high, and their disabilities were very apparent from a young age. Both were diagnosed by the ages of 2 and 3, they attended a Specialist Nursery, and now both attend a Severe Learning Difficulty school. Since joining the SEND community, I have developed a passion for Autism and supporting SEND families; with a particular interest in SEND Law.
Life with SEND children can be extremely challenging. The majority of our days can feel like an upward struggle, with the main aim being - to 'survive' the day. But there is also beauty and wonderment within the Autism Spectrum; to see the world from a new perspective and at a somewhat different speed. My boys have taught me endless bounds of patience, compassion and strength. They have taught me so many new ways to communicate, but most importantly, that love requires no words at all.
Hello everyone, I’m Lisa. I am a married mum with 2 boys. I began my journey into the SEND world at a young age, having a younger brother who is Autistic. His diagnosis came at the time I was applying for university. I took a particular interest in Autism; which determined my route of studies, and graduated from the University of Wales, in 2009, with a BA(Hons) in Inclusion.
After graduating, I worked in a range of settings including The National Autistic Society, Autism provisions, secondary schools and primary schools. All my roles included supporting Autistic people and their families.
Since having children, I have also began a new journey as a SEND parent. My boys have multiple diagnosis’ between them including Autism, hearing impairment, Global Developmental Delay and hypermobility. I continue to have a very strong interest in Autism, particularly around behaviours which challenge. I have a passion for inclusion and ensuring people with disabilities and their families are receiving the correct support.
The journeys we have taken to get to where we are today were never easy. Just like so many, we have had to fight at every turn. The SEND systems that we all face are no longer fit for purpose. Support is not readily enough available for the families who need it, nor is it well advertised or signposted.
In 2021, whilst our children were attending the same Specialist Nursery, Lisa and I met as parents waiting around at nursery pick ups. We shared the same passion and determination to support every family that came through the Nursery; which soon grew into us setting up the PTA. It was clear to see the difference we were making to the journeys of other SEND families; the supportive community we were building, and the confidence that we were giving to parents to fight for the support they needed.
In 2023 we made the decision to expand our growing community into the world of Social Media, thus SENDmummies was first formed. We set up Tiktok and Instagram accounts to be able to spread our knowledge and extend our support to parents nationwide. It was evident once again, on a much larger scale, that so many SEND families were facing the same struggles with a lack of support, misinformation and armed with nowhere near enough knowledge to fight.
Today, we offer information and advice on a range of supports; including application services and training workshops. SENDmummies cover a variety of topics relevant to supporting SEND families, including Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCPs), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), the Blue Badge scheme for hidden disabilities, Understanding Autism, Sensory Issues, Behaviours which Challenge and Support with Sleep.
